Crown of Nails is a story of conquest, defiance, and the price of refusing to kneel. A defeated ruler is offered one final choice: submission — or a crown forged not for kings, but for those who would rather bleed than bow. But beneath the imagery of battle and defeat lies a more personal story — about failure, the scars it leaves behind, and finding the strength to stand again when everything you built has fallen apart.
In the Viking Age, the North was not a single realm, nor were the Norsemen a single people united against the outside world. Scandinavia was divided among rival kings, jarls and chieftains, bound by shifting alliances and competing for land, wealth, trade and power. Norse warriors fought other Norsemen as readily as they raided foreign shores, and a fleet appearing beyond the horizon could carry enemies who spoke the same language, worshipped the same gods and lived by much the same customs.
One of the most famous stories of that struggle is the rise of Harald Fairhair. According to later Norse tradition, Harald defeated rival kings and chieftains and brought Norway under his rule, with the Battle of Hafrsfjord in the late ninth century becoming the legendary culmination of his conquest. Modern historians see the unification as a much longer and less complete process, but the world behind the legend was real: a fractured Norway in which one ruler could expand his power by defeating another. It is this world of rival Norse rulers — where one jarl could conquer the lands of another — that forms the historical backdrop to Crown of Nails.
Mortain
Born among the northern fjords and obsessed with cold, brutal beauty, Mortain makes heavy music where history, myth and human darkness collide. Their music draws from heavy metal, dark storytelling and the raw landscapes of the North — massive guitars, relentless rhythms and melodies that stay long after the noise is gone.
Each song opens a different chapter. King and hangman, sailor and outcast, battlefields, black shores and old ghosts become stories about fear, power, defiance and survival. Mortain do not recreate the past. They drag it into the present, turn it up loud, and let it speak for itself.
